  1. Tom ensured me that I, a studio painter in the abstract expressionist direction, would find it helpful to work within the traditional method and palette of Benson/Paxton/Tarbell and he was absolutely correct and I would highly recommend this and any of Mr. Dunlay's workshops. Tom made it seem natural if not effortless to be out there, with easel and brush, attempting to capture the character of a place. His evidential love of teaching and passing along of his knowledge quickly became comforting and contagious and I was eager to learn and absorb its rich history. Tom's generous and gracious technical instruction was handed out in much the same manner as his painting style - with gentle yet decisive words and demonstrations that came at just the right time and place. Color, light, shape all appeared more evident to me under his tutelage and grew throughout the week, immersed in the beauty of the island and surrounded by the warmth of the family home and kingship formed in the company of other artists. Not only was this a worthwhile investment, it's resulting impact on my painting and the friendships formed will surely last a lifetime. I look forward to taking more workshops with Tom and highly recommend this approach to any artist looking to improve.

  2. Tom is one of the most accomplished and successful artists trained by Ives Gammell in the Boston School style of painting. He is dedicated to passing his knowledge of these techniques to a new generation of artists through his workshops and instruction. I found the instruction I received during his 2015 Nantucket workshop to be incredibly helpful at many levels - from materials, to techniques, to how to see, think about and capture a scene. One of the fun aspects of the week was being together with a great group of other artists sharing stories and ideas over dinner after a long day painting. Another was just enjoying the beauty of the island. I am looking forward to trying to take my painting skills to the next level during the 2016 workshop.

  3. As a novice painter in oils, I was unsure if I would be qualified to attend one of Tom Dunlay's workshops. I had followed Mr. Dunlay's Facebook site and found I was mesmerized by his beautiful landscape and portrait paintings. In researching his history, I learned that Tom was one of only a handful of students especially chosen to learn for many years under the rigorous mentorship of Mr. R.H. Ives Gammell, a renown artist from the Old Boston School of Art, following in the lineage of Frank Benson, William Paxton, and Edmund Tarbell.
After contacting Mr. Dunlay, he assured me that he would instruct me from where I was in my personal artistic development and that I would be able to learn and accomplish much during the time I was there.
I can attest that this was one of the most valuable and instructive workshops I've attended. Under Tom's patient, kind, knowledgeable, and positive instruction, I was able to leave with a much better sense of who I was as an artist, what I needed to focus on in order to grow, and a much broader understanding of art history and its importance and relevance in the modern world.
I have now attended two of Tom's workshops (the other in North Haven, Maine at the island home and workshop of Frank Benson) and will be attending the 2016 Nantucket workshop, as well. Each of the two I attended were valuable experiences, unique in their own indivual ways. We painted out-of-doors from morning to night, stopping for lunch and gourmet dinners in the evenings. We were continually absorbed in the world of painting, asking questions, being tutored and lectured under the gentle guidance of Tom from the time we arose each morning, sitting around breakfast, lunch, or dinner tables, and often talking until late into the night. The friendships all of us made through these workshops continue today and many of us return each year for new instructional experiences. (The gorgeous scenery of the locations only add to the spell of the week!)
I highly recommend Tom's workshops if you are serious about wanting to grow and learn from an exceptional and highly qualified instructor!

  4. I don't like to spend my money on mere things. If I'm going to pay for something, I want it to be something I can learn from. That's why I signed up for Tom Dunlay's plein air painting course in Nantucket. I wanted to learn to paint outdoors--something I had never done--and I wanted to see a master in action. That is exactly what I experienced as Tom guided each participant on their own canvases and then stepped before the easel and produced a work over two consecutive afternoons in the field that had all the light and air of a Monet. Seeing this work come together from a simple toned canvas was worth every penny I paid, and, on top of his insight-filled instruction, I also received lodging, food and great conversations about art throughout the week.

  5. As an artist and art instructor, I love spending my vacation time taking a Tom Dunlay Workshop! This valuable workshop will benefit all painters who want to stay on top of their profession, improve their landscape painting and understand how to achieve a more truthful light effect. The light on Nantucket is one of the best opportunity of places to be painting at while enjoying the camaraderie of painting with fellow artists under Tom's guidance.
